Live Updates – Two Baton Rouge police officers dead, multiple shot, authorities say

What we know: 

–Two law enforcement officers confirmed dead

–Shooting happened near Airline and Old Hammond highways around 9 a.m.

Update, 10:59 a.m. 

Multiple Baton Rouge police officers and East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s deputies were shot around 9 a.m. Sunday on Airline Highway near Old Hammond Highway, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks said shortly before 11 a.m.

Multiple officers sustained injuries and were transported to local hospitals. Hicks said authorities do not have “concrete numbers or the extent of injuries.”

The scene is still active, but contained, Hicks said. Those in the area are asked to remain inside and contact law enforcement if they see anything suspicious.

Update, 10:48 a.m.

At least two law enforcement officers were killed Sunday morning in a shooting on Airline Highway near Old Hammond Highway, and others were wounded, authorities confirmed.

East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks said about 10:15 that the area is still an active scene.

Both lanes of Airline Highway are shut down from Goodwood Boulevard to Old Hammond Highway and from Old Hammond to Drusilla Drive, Hicks said.

About 20 police officers wearing bulletproof vests are near the scene and a helicopter is flying overhead.

Armed police officers were stationed at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, where a coroner’s vehicle had pulled up.

Update, 10:31 a.m. 

At least seven officers were injured and three are feared dead, CNN reported.

“The count is three officers dead possibly,” Mayor-President Kip Holden told CNN, saying that it is still an active scene.

Update, 10:05 a.m.

Baton Rouge Police spokesman Sgt. Don Coppola confirmed that several officers were shot by gunfire.

The scene is “contained,” he said, but was unable to confirm if the suspect(s) were apprehended.

Coppola said that East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies may have also been among those shot.

Update, 10 a.m.

Two Baton Rouge police officers shot on Sunday morning have died, confirmed William Daniel, the city-parish’s chief administrative officer.

Update, 9:56 a.m.

East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President Kip Holden tells CNN that “three police officers are feared dead.”
